Henan Hongke Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd. recently commissioned a titanium dioxide (TiO₂) calcination rotary kiln production line at a customer site in Yingkou, Liaoning. The system is now running. Here's the story.
The Job: Calcining Titanium Dioxide
Our customer makes TiO₂ pigment — the white stuff used in paints, coatings, plastics, and paper. To get the right pigment properties, you have to calcine the material in a rotary kiln at precise temperatures. The customer needed a reliable system that could handle the entire calcination process: drying, desulfurization, and crystal transformation.
What We Supplied
A complete calcination line with a rotary kiln engineered specifically for TiO₂ processing.
| Key Spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Calcination temp | 860–920°C (for crystal phase change) |
| Kiln slope | 2–3.5% |
| Rotation speed | 0.2–0.6 rpm (variable) |
| Max temp | Up to 1,000°C |
| Fuel | Gas or coal |
The system includes:
Feed screw for filter cake
Rotary kiln with refractory lining
Multi-channel burner
Cooler for product cooling and heat recovery
Multi-stage dust collector
PLC controls with zone temperature monitoring
How the Process Works
| Stage | Temp | What Happens |
|---|---|---|
| Drying | ~300–400°C | Moisture evaporates |
| Desulfurization | ~700–800°C | Sulfates break down |
| Crystal transformation | 850–930°C | Anatase → Rutile (the key step) |
| Crystal growth | 930–1,000°C | Pigment particles develop |
The material stays in the kiln for about 5–6 hours. Final product: rutile TiO₂ at around 98% purity.
Why TiO₂ Needs a Special Kiln
This isn't a standard lime or cement kiln. The crystal phase change from anatase to rutile requires tight temperature control across zones. If the temperature isn't right, pigment quality suffers. The kiln also has to dry wet filter cake (over 50% moisture) in the first section and remove sulfates in the next. It's a multi-stage process in one machine.
What the Customer Gets
High-purity TiO₂ pigment – meets market specs
Optimized crystal size – precise temperature control makes it happen
Lower fuel costs – heat recovery from the cooler
Continuous 24/7 operation – minimal downtime
Clean operation – dust collector captures particulates
