Quick Facts
| Where | Bukavu region, DR Congo |
| What | Φ2×8m rotary drum dryer + biomass furnace + wet scrubber |
| For | Chicken manure, 65% moisture down to 18% |
| Output | 8–10 tons per day |
| The hard part | Manure that sticks to everything |
Nobody Warns You About Sticky Manure
Chicken manure at 65% moisture is not like sand or gravel. It clumps. It coats metal. In a standard rotary drum, it builds up on the shell until the inside looks like a smooth pipe—hot air blows right through the middle and the material barely dries.
That‘s what the customer in Bukavu was up against. High humidity, no reliable grid power, and neighbors who would complain if dust and ammonia drifted their way.
What We Changed
The drum itself is standard Φ2×8m carbon steel. The internals are not.
First third: short, wide scoops that break incoming clumps before they can adhere
Middle section: staggered lifters that toss material into the hot gas stream
Discharge end: a chain knocker that slaps the shell as it rotates, knocking off the sticky layer
The furnace burns local biomass—sawdust and crop residue—because diesel is expensive and the grid is unreliable. A diesel generator backs up the drive motor and fan when the grid drops.
For emissions, a cyclone catches coarse dust, then a wet scrubber handles fine particles and knocks down ammonia odor. It‘s not a chemical plant scrubber, but it keeps the neighbors off the phone.
The Factory Test That Closed the Deal
Before shipping, we ran the dryer with a sticky sand mix that simulated the customer’s material. The chain knocker worked. The customer‘s engineer watched it run and signed off on the spot. Fourteen days of on-site commissioning later, the line was producing 8–10 tons per day at 16–18% moisture.
What It Looks Like Now
| Before | After | |
|---|---|---|
| Drying | 7–10 days in the open | 25–30 minutes in the drum |
| Moisture consistency | All over the place | 16–18%, adjustable |
| Product lost to rain/spoilage | 15–20% | Under 5% |
| Fuel | Sun | Local biomass residue |
At the 18-month inspection, the shell showed no significant corrosion. The chain was replaced once—normal wear.
Why Henan Hongke Heavy Machinery
Rotary kilns, Rotary Dryers, ball mills, crushers, and the lines around them. One-stop solution, turnkey delivery. We test your material before we quote. If it sticks, we design for sticky.
Questions We Get Asked
Will this work on cow manure too?Yes, with lifter adjustments. Cow manure is less sticky but wetter. Send a sample and we‘ll tell you what changes.
What if the biomass runs out?The furnace can be fitted with a dual-fuel burner. This customer kept a diesel line as backup.
How often do you clean the drum? With the chain knocker and lifter design, routine cleaning is minimal. The discharge zone is the only area that needs periodic inspection.
Got a manure problem that won’t dry? Send us the moisture content and a photo of the material. We‘ll tell you what drum and what internals. Straight answers, no sales script.
